IL
Start with this online learning segment.

It is the story of Chicago Firefighter Scott Lietz.

Scott tells his story about a May 2005 response to a call for the odor of natural gas. He became a victim of an explosion while in the basement attempting to turn off the gas at the main meter.  He was not in his personal protective gear.  He wants us to learn from his accident that the "how we do things" attitude can kill you.

eddieEddie DiMartino - His story

The evening of February 18, 2009 was like many other evenings in the DiMartino household. He served as the Assistant Chief for the Greenbush Fire Department in New York. At approximately 10:15 PM he responded to a call.  It was snowy and the roads were icy. He was not wearing a seat belt. As more information was obtained about the call, a decision was made for responding apparatus to continue without lights and sirens.  This downgraded response occurred, just after that Eddie's vehicle rolled while responding.  He was now a victim and rescue was required.

Eddie was extricated and rushed to the hospital.  He suffered some initial memory loss, his family was devastated.  What would she do without here husband and how would their young son cope with the devastating news of his fathers accident?  What would happen if Eddie succumbed to his injuries?  All of these questions that Eddie's family was now faced with, are concerns we try not to think about on a daily basis.  But on this day, it all changed for the DiMartino family.  It is a compelling story.  We hope you take away the lesson that both Eddie and his wife want all firefighters' families to learn.
