NYS Fallen Firefighters' Memorial
October 8, 2024

VIDEO: Thirty-two firefighters who died in the line of duty in New York State were honored in Albany on Tuesday.  Their names were added to the New York State Fallen Firefighters Memorial, which now includes the names of more than 2,500 fallen heroes.  Lt. Governor Antonio Delgado said a few words at the ceremony.  "I hope deeply that you find comfort not only in the beauty of your memories with these brave individuals, but also in knowledge that your loved ones left an indelible mark on the lives of so many," he said.  The memorial at the Empire State Plaza in Albany was dedicated and unveiled in 1999 with the names of 1,800 fallen firefighters.

Ives Construction Fire
August 7, 2024

VIDEO: Devastated. That's how the owners of a Town of Watertown business say they feel after a fire destroyed their construction company. There's not much left of Ives Construction on Old Rices Road. Flames broke out around 1:30 p.m., creating thick black smoke and even small explosions. Volunteers from at least nine fire departments rushed to the scene. Within minutes, firefighters knew they'd be unable to save the business. "We got the roof that's caved in a little bit so we got everybody out. We're all spraying from the outside," said Assistant Chief John Smith, Town of Watertown Fire Department. The building housed heavy equipment - things like bulldozers and track hoes. Then there were fuel and chemicals inside. "We started to try to remove them at this point and it got too dangerous. We pulled everybody out," said Smith.
